Gato Negro Spanish Theater established in 2013 by the producer, director, and actor, Vicky Velasco. This was the first Spanish theater group in Calgary and now it has over six years of theatrical activity and over seven successful plays, which include, “The Jump Back” (El Salto Atras) 2013-2018, “Between Ties” (Entre Lazos) 2014, “Immigrant, I am” (ImmigranteSoy) 2014, “A Mid Summer Night’s Dream” 2017, and “Chimera” (Quimeras) (2017). These productions have had great acceptance in the Latin-American community as well as the bilingual programs in the Calgary public and Catholic schools; which all of their plays have had a full house.
“Quimeras” in 2018 at the Theatre Junction Grand. Recreating the realism magic of Latin-American writers, Stories from G. Garcia Marquez (Colombia), Henry Gonzalez (Venezuela), Ornelio Jorge Cardoso (Mexico), Mario Benedetti (Uruguay) as well as unknown stories.
